What is Prometheus?

Prometheus is an open-source system monitoring and alerting toolkit originally built at SoundCloud. It has a very active developer and user community and is now a standalone open-source project maintained independently of any company. To emphasize this and to clarify the project’s governance structure, Prometheus joined the Cloud Native Computing Foundation in 2016 as the second hosted project after Kubernetes.

What does Prometheus do?

Prometheus monitors systems and services for availability and performance data and then stores that data in a time-series database. It also provides APIs and a web interface for querying that data. Finally, it can generate alerts based on threshold violations or other conditions.

What are the benefits of using Prometheus?

Prometheus is widely adopted for its flexibility and robust feature set. It excels at monitoring modern infrastructures, including container deployments and microservices architectures. Additionally, its open-source status means it is free to use and modify.
